Sassafras Festival Promotes Park

Many of the good times in Burnettown  revolve around the venerable sassafras tree. Once the source of homemade remedies from freckles to the flu. Horse Creek Valley’s favorite tree has become a symbol of nearly an army of volunteers determined to make a difference in the area. A few of these people recently gathered on the Burnettown Hall grounds where the Sassafras Fun Valley Park is expected to be built much in the manner of an old-fashioned barn raising. More than $9000.00 dollars was raised for Horse Creek Valley’s first park. The money is to pay for the materials. The construction of such playground equipment such as the Rocket Ship & Clatter Bridge will be done by volunteers.  Were going to need about $5,000.00 more and we hope to make a dent in the amount at the Sassafras Festival. In fact the month of October may well be called Sassafras month in Burnettown, SC Hwy 421 which winds through the heart of the valley will be closed for the third annual Horse Creek Valley Sassafras Festival Oct. 4. Complete with a parade featuring Mr. King Sassafras live entertainment, food , drink and crafters. The town also intends to celebrate National Volunteer Day Oct. 25, by completing construction of Sassafras Park. Work is expected to begin Oct. 22 for a four-day building marathon. “On Oct. 22-24 we will need 30 volunteers but on Oct 25 we will need 150 volunteers at one time” Mr. Rodriguez said. In fact work has started on the park. Claudine Sampson whose home is on an adjoining lot, donated one-third acre of her backyard to the park in memory of her husband Ralph Sampson . “My family didn’t  need the property and I decided to help out the park. We retired here in 1975 from Fort Lauderdale, Fla. And I wanted to give something back” Mrs. Sampson said. The park itself was made possible by a grant from Kimberly-Clark  for $75,000.00. It remained for burnettown to raise about $15,000.00 and to get workers to build the playground designed by children.
