Through a toll-free "Hotline" which is posted at all Norfolk Southern grade crossings, citizens can contact the Police Communication Center to report problems with crossing protection devices across our system

Norfolk Southern's Police Communication Center or PCC began operations on September 1, 1993. The PCC operates 24 hours a day 7 days a week, and performs a wide variety of tasks in support of law enforcement, emergency services, safety, facility security, public relations, and various communication tasks for other departments as needed within the corporation.

The PCC has the primary responsibility of coordinating all police operations. These toll free numbers will connect you with a dispatcher who will assist you.

Thursday, January 06, 2005 (Washington, DC
In response to the train derailment and hazardous materials spill involving a Norfolk Southern freight train in Aiken, SC, early this morning, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta and I have dispatched a veteran team of three senior safety experts from the Federal Railroad Administration to the incident scene. They will join five FRA safety inspectors and one operations specialist already on site. The purpose of this nine-member team will be twofold. First, they will assist the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) in its investigation by providing expertise critical to its review of circumstances surrounding the crash. In addition, the team, which includes the Department’s top railroad hazardous materials expert, will conduct a separate investigation into the circumstances surrounding the breach of at least one chlorine tank car to determine precisely how the derailment led to the release of chlorine gas into the area. We are concerned about the nature of the incident and the tragic loss of life and are committed to a thorough review in order to ensure the safe operation of the railroad and the well-being of residents living in the Aiken community.

GRANITEVILLE, S.C., Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Norfolk Southern Railway Co. today issued the following statement from Robert A. Wells, its general manager of casualty claims, regarding the handling of claims associated with the Jan. 6 accident here:

Shortly following the Jan. 6, 2005, derailment and evacuation at Graniteville, S.C., Norfolk Southern Railway Co. established a temporary emergency Local Assistance Center to expedite the handling and payment of certain expenses and losses incurred by citizens impacted by the accident and subsequent evacuation. It is our intent through the settlement of claims involving incidental expenses, inconvenience, evacuation costs and substantiated property damage to ease the impact of the accident and evacuation on the community.

Recently there has been an inquiry about the scope of the release language associated with endorsement of the settlement check. This is to confirm that, as indicated by Norfolk Southern claims personnel, settlements of such claims for incidental expenses, inconvenience, evacuation costs and property damage claims, where we have utilized endorsement checks, does not preclude submission of personal injury claims, claims for subsequently incurred incidental expenses, and unforeseen property damage claims in the future.

All claims will be addressed on an individual basis and will be handled by
the local Norfolk Southern claims office. Claims should continue to be
presented at our Local Assistance Center in Aiken while it remains open, and
thereafter to:

Mr. Thomas Tate               Mr. Doug Shoun
Senior Claim Agent              District Claim Agent

    (803) 733-3936 (fax)           (704) 378-3767 (fax)

Again, Norfolk Southern regrets any problems experienced by the community and will continue to make every reasonable effort to address citizen concerns and claims as quickly as possible. We thank those who have cooperated with and aided our efforts to address this unfortunate incident.
